2002 Lexus ES300 Review

Lexus ES300 Review

A total redesign makes a new machine out of the venerable ES 300
2002 Lexus ES300 Base Price (MSRP) $31,505
As Tested (MSRP) $39,045

When the Lexus ES 300 first arrived a little more than a decade ago, ES stood for "Executive Sedan," suggesting conservatism. Executives, not to mention sedans, have changed a lot since then. Now we have the all new 2002 ES 300, with conservative execution but aggressive styling. From venerable to bold, one swift stroke. The careful elegance of this car is going to knock some executives' socks off.

2002 Lexus LS 430 Review

Lexus LS 430 Review

Sybaritic comfort with science-fiction technology.
2002 Lexus LS 430 Base Price (MSRP) $54,405
As Tested (MSRP) $68,995

Introduced last year, the Lexus LS 430 represents the third generation of this full-size flagship. The LS 430 is a direct descendent of the ground-breaking LS 400 that appeared in 1990. The LS 430 continues unchanged for 2002.

Many consumers and experts alike regard the Lexus LS 430 as the new benchmark for high-tech luxury in a meticulously crafted sedan. It offers every luxury amenity you could want, plus a few we would never have imagined. It presented a very real example of everything technology makes possible, with systems that out-think and out-perform lesser cars and, in some cases, lesser drivers. Its functional aerodynamics and exacting quality control lead the rest of the world industry.

At once a deluxe limousine and high-performance touring car, the LS 430, delivers quick acceleration and agile handling along with features designed to take the work out of driving.

2002 Lexus LX470 Review

Lexus LX470 Review

Luxury and off-road capability.
2002 Lexus LX470 Base Price (MSRP) $61,855
As Tested (MSRP) $63,345

The Lexus LX 470 has been the benchmark for first-class luxury and ultimate off-road capability.

The big Lexus now faces a totally new Range Rover engineered by BMW and a less expensive but powerful Cadillac Escalade, and its bland exterior design is beginning to show its age.

However, this remains a wonderfully luxurious and highly capable vehicle. LX 470 is powered by one of the best V8s in the business and offers crisp handling, as well as a luxurious ride. The interior is elegant, well equipped, and the kind of environment you wish your house had.

It also comes from Lexus, which boasts the best quality, durability and reliability in the business, along with retailers dedicated to customer satisfaction.

2002 Lexus RX300 Review

Lexus RX300 Review

A luxury wagon with a smooth, quiet ride.
2002 Lexus RX300 Base Price (MSRP) $33,955
As Tested (MSRP) $38,825

When it was introduced in mid-1998, the RX 300 represented the vanguard of a new class of vehicles. More a tall car than a truck-like SUV, the RX 300 nonetheless delivered the SUV attributes most urban/suburban buyers wanted: a high seating position, generous, versatile cargo capacity, and all-weather traction. But what made it popular was its Lexus levels of quality, luxury, comfort, and quietude.

The RX 300's near-instant success quickly inspired imitators, including the Acura MDX, BMW X5, and Buick Rendezvous. Still, the RX 300 remains one of the top contenders. It delivers a smooth on-road ride, fine handling, a quiet interior and a responsive V6 engine.

RX 300 can be equipped with either full-time four-wheel drive for poor weather driving conditions, or front-wheel drive. It's not built for optimal off-road adventures. If that's what you're looking for, try the similarly priced Land Rover Discovery.

For 2002, Lexus has updated the RX 300's DVD navigation system.

2002 Lexus SC430 Review

Lexus SC430 Review

Sporty convertible, refined coupe in one sumptuous package.
2002 Lexus SC430 Base Price (MSRP) $58,455
As Tested (MSRP) $61,295

Dismiss the image of conservative car styling from the elite Lexus brand because the new SC 430 confronts that theme by injecting eye-catching curves in a slinky design with a daring face, exaggerated wheels and bubble-back rump.

It's both a refined hardtop coupe and a sporty convertible fitted with a sumptuous leather-wrapped cockpit and the powerful mechanical hardware of a serious performance car.

With a muscular V8 engine shooting 300 horsepower to the rear wheels in a classic arrangement, the sleek SC 430 captures the essence of an aggressive two-seat roadster. Yet it elevates the concept to new dimensions by dressing the package in the elegant Lexus mode of lavish luxury layered with dazzling electronic displays and sophisticated vehicle controls.
