2002 Buick Century Review

Buick Century Review

Traditional sedan with roomy interior, responsive V6.
2002 Buick Century Base Price (MSRP) $20,285
As Tested (MSRP) $22,067

Buick Century is a car you can count on, day after day, mile after mile. It's practical and comfortable, with a smooth ride, good performance, and predictable handling. It even offers a fair amount of luxury for a very practical price. As Buick's best-selling model, Century has established a large and satisfied following.

The Century provides the comfort of a traditional American sedan. The ride quality is soft and its V6 engine is strong but frugal. The interior design is straightforward. Everything is exactly where you think it should be, and everything works exactly how you expect it should work. Its broad bench seats provide plenty stretch-out room, but bucket seats are available.

2002 Buick Regal Review

Buick Regal Review

Cruising softly with a big stick.
2002 Buick Regal Base Price (MSRP) $23,230
As Tested (MSRP) $27,895

Buick Regal is a performance-oriented mid-size sedan. And because it's Buick's performance-oriented mid-size sedan, it doesn't wear its performance on its shirt sleeve.

The supercharged Regal GS can match Pontiac's nifty Grand Prix GTP stride for stride, sprinting from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.5 seconds. But you would never know it just by looking. The Pontiac is an extrovert on steroids: All exaggerated bulges and air dams, it's like a muscular body in tight T-shirt. Conservative Buick prefers what we might call the 007 doctrine: Pack a powerful punch and a 9mm Walther PPK in the pocket of your tuxedo.

2002 Buick Rendezvous Review

Buick Rendezvous Review

A versatile five- to seven-passenger crossover vehicle.
2002 Buick Rendezvous Base Price (MSRP) $24,924
As Tested (MSRP) $33,062

Buick's all new Rendezvous crosses over all the lines that used to separate sedans, minivans, and SUVs. The word "crossover" is now becoming a word, as manufacturers are no longer putting quotation marks around it. No matter what you decide to call it, the Buick Rendezvous is well-priced and easy to like.

The 2002 Buick Rendezvous is versatile, seating five to seven passengers. It's nicely styled. It has fine manners on the highway, a benefit of its unibody construction normally associated with sedans. At the same time, the four-wheel-drive version can cope with gnarly weather and marginal off-highway tracks with dignity. The three-row interior compares favorably with costlier vehicles.

There is much to like here in terms of engineering, flexibility, and appearance.
