2002 Ford Escape Review

Ford Escape Review

Best-in-class handling and performance.
2002 Ford Escape Base Price (MSRP) $18,415
As Tested (MSRP) $25,345

Ford Escape offers agile handling on both paved and unpaved roads. It rides smoothly and gets strong acceleration performance from an optional V6 engine. The Escape seats four people comfortably, and folding down the rear seats reveals a flat, moderately sized cargo area. Best of all, its price is relatively low.

A completely new vehicle a year ago, the Ford Escape is among the best small sport-utilities vehicle on sale today, especially if you spend little time off road.

2002 Ford Explorer Review

Ford Explorer Review

All aboard! New Explorer seats seven.
2002 Ford Explorer Base Price (MSRP) $24,020
As Tested (MSRP) $35,160

All new for 2002, the Ford Explorer is better than the previous version in every respect. Handling and ride quality are improved with a new frame and an independent rear suspension. Performance is quicker with new or improved overhead-cam engines. It's a quieter, more refined vehicle with an all new interior. New safety features are being introduced.

But the biggest news for the Explorer is the availability of third-row seating, allowing it to carry up to seven passengers. It's roomier and more comfortable, benefits of its longer wheelbase, wider track and some clever engineering.

In spite of all this, the new Explorer looks familiar inside and out. It seems the more things change, the more they stay the same. In all likelihood, the Ford Explorer will continue to be America's most popular station wagon.

2002 Ford F-150 Review

Ford F-150 Review

Stylish pickup with a comfortable four-door option.

From a working tool to a weekend toy, a luxurious family hauler or a hairy hot rod, the F-150 can be almost any truck you can imagine.

Like most full-size pickups, it comes in a myriad of bed lengths, two different body styles, and now three distinct cab configurations. This means the overall length and wheelbase can vary tremendously, the latter from 120 inches to 157.4.

Ford Focus Review

New ZX5 adds more practicality to the fun.
2002 Ford Focus Base Price (MSRP) $12,470
As Tested (MSRP) $19,730

Ford Focus is the world's best-selling car. It's also one of the most enjoyable compacts in its price range. It's fun, it's practical.

The Focus has won safety kudos from the federal government. It has earned awards from several magazines. And it is the only car to have earned European Car of the Year and the North American Car of the Year awards.

Its New Edge styling has helped the Focus stand out from the crowd whether in hatchback, sedan or wagon format.

Two new models have debuted for 2002, the Focus ZX5 and the Focus SVT.

2002 Ford Mustang Review

Ford Mustang Review

The only pony car left faces a bright future.
2002 Ford Mustang Base Price (MSRP) $17,305
As Tested (MSRP) $34,995

Recently voted America's favorite car of all time, the 37-year-old Ford Mustang just seems to roll along like a runaway freight train, headed for a certain future. Each year brings new surprises and delights to about 200,000 new owners. The latest delight is the 2003 SVT Cobra.

This will be the last year of production for the Mustang's archrivals, the Chevrolet Camaro and the Pontiac Firebird. That means the Mustang, which created the ponycar in the spring of 1964, will once again be alone in this segment in 2003.

With the new Cobra closing in on 400 horsepower and the Camaro and Firebird bowing out, the Mustang's future looks as bright as the sun.

2002 Ford Ranger Review

Ford Ranger Review

Most popular compact pickup packs most power in class.
2002 Ford Ranger Base Price (MSRP) $12,270
As Tested (MSRP) $23,600

Ford Ranger is the overwhelming first choice among compact pickups. Prices for basic work trucks start at less than $13,000, while the availability of a powerful V6 engine with a five-speed automatic, along with a slick four-wheel-drive system and a variety of trim levels and body styles make the Ranger appealing to a wide audience.

Last year, fresh styling, new engines and redesigned components made the Ranger stronger, more practical, more convenient and more comfortable than ever. Those strengths have all been carried over to a largely unchanged 2002 model.

2002 Ford Taurus Review

Ford Taurus Review

Soccer mom with sex appeal.
2002 Ford Taurus Base Price (MSRP) $18,750
As Tested (MSRP) $25,205

Taurus is the popular mid-size sedan without the boredom factor. It's a bowl of chocolate-chip mint in a sea of plain vanilla. While most sedans in its class seem designed to blend into the scenery, the Taurus stands out like a wildebeest in plaid pajamas.

Not only does the Taurus look like it came from the future, it drives like it came over from Europe, and with something double its really quite reasonable price tag. Two engines are available, and both deliver a vigorous response. Taurus rides smoothly enough for family duty, but with crisp and sporty handling that would satisfy an aspiring Formula 1 driver.

Not only that, but the cabin is functional and attractive, with controls that are straightforward and easy to use. The materials, switchgear and interior textures have a high-quality look and feel.

2002 Ford Thunderbird Review

It gives new life to Ford's whole line of passenger cars, adds a second convertible choice in addition to the Mustang, provides a new luxury car that Ford hasn't had, and promises lots of dealer showroom traffic for the next year or so as the curious stream in.
