2002 Mercedes C230 Review

Mercedes C230 Review

Small cars from the sublime to the ridiculously fast.
2002 Mercedes C230 Base Price (MSRP) $24,950
As Tested (MSRP) $27,860

Mercedes has set the small-car world on fire with its new line of C-Class cars, including the C240 and C320 sedans, the C320 station wagon, the C32 AMG high-performance sedan, and the newest member of the family, the C230 Sports Coupe, a car designed to attract first-time Mercedes buyers with its combination of style, space, and a very complete equipment package.

With the exterior styling of the much larger and more expensive S-class, technology shared with the larger E-class, and an interior design all its own, the C-Class family in its first full year on the market has established new sales records around the world, but especially here in the United States, helped by the new price-leader C230 Coupe starting $24,950.

2002 Mercedes G-Class Review

Mercedes G-Class Review

This one will go just about anywhere on the planet.
2002 Mercedes G-Class Base Price (MSRP) $72,500
As Tested (MSRP) $73,165

Mercedes has officially introduced its Gelandewagen to the U.S. The G-Class presents a utilitarian appearance with flat glass and flat body panels made of thick steel. It backs that up with its truck-based ladder-frame, permanent four-wheel drive, and a heavy-duty off-road suspension. The G prefix comes from the German word "Gelandewagen," which roughly translates to off-road car. The U.S. gets the top model, loaded with luxury features and the Mercedes 5.0-liter V8.

Its progenitor was born from a request by the Shah of Iran for some military vehicles. The Shah's existing military vehicles were too slow and cumbersome on normal roads, so Mercedes designed a sturdy utility vehicle that was ready for production by 1979. By then, however, the Shah had been deposed. Next, the Argentine army came to Mercedes, looking for an off-road car. Strained relations with Britain had prevented the Argentines from buying British Land Rovers, so there was pent-up demand. The current generation began production in 1989 and was revised last year, but overall, the looks haven't changed.

2002 Mercedes M-Class Review

Mercedes M-Class Review

It's not cheap, but it's arguably the best.
2002 Mercedes M-Class Base Price (MSRP) $36,300
As Tested (MSRP) $49,385

Mercedes covers a wide spectrum with its M-Class sport-utilities. The ML320 delivers the rugged looks, room, safety and utility that high-end SUV buyers seek along with a V6 engine that keeps pricing down to earthly levels. The ML500 offers all that, plus considerably more oomph from its V8 engine. And the ML55 AMG hammers you with high performance.

New for 2002, the 5.0-liter ML500, our test vehicle, replaces last year's 4.3-liter ML430.

2002 Mercedes S-Class Review

Mercedes S-Class Review

The benchmark ultra-luxury sedan.
2002 Mercedes S-Class Base Price (MSRP) $71,850
As Tested (MSRP) $86,820

The Mercedes S-Class has been on the road going on two years now, but the technology found in the these sedans remains the benchmark for the class. Under that understated skin lurks the heart of a robot. Microprocessors and onboard sensors instantaneously determine many of the forces acting upon the car, filter the data, and adjust the car's handling for you.

Starting with the S500, the S-Class was redesigned in the spring of 1999 for model year 2000. The car came out lower, sleeker (most aerodynamic efficiency in a passenger car), smaller, and roomier.
